Thursday 8th April 1915: The
Machine Gun Section of the 1st/5th Bedfordshire Regiment want a dog for a
mascot and the have a preference for a bull dog. It should be a young one,
about 7 to 12 months, so that it could be trained to mount guard over the guns.
"We are not in a position to pay a long price" says the spokesman of
the section "for, as you know, out money is not much, and if you can get
one given to us we would be greatly obliged. Of course, you know" he says,
"the abbreviation of the Bedfordshire Regiment is BD, meaning bull dog, so
we would like to be up-to-date".
Anyone who has a dog (male)
that will answer the requirements, and is willing to make a present of it to
the soldiers should communicate with Sergeant R. M. Bean, Machine Gun Section,
1st/5th Bedfordshire Regiment, Norwich.
