Friday 10th December 1915: Corporal Ernest Batterson,
Bedfordshire Yeomanry, writing to a friend at Biggleswade says: “So glad to
hear that you estimate that 2,000 or so of our footballers in the county have
voluntarily turned up. Could you send us an old football? There are 25 of us
here, all Bedford boys. You ask me Should I like to referee the Allies v Huns
match? Yes I should. Would I give a penalty? Would I what. I’d give everything
I could against the fiends, because they’ve broken every law, rule and
principle and ought to be penalised. The pent-up feelings of the most partisan
football crowd are small compared with what we are putting up with now.
