Day Six on the Somme

Thursday 6th July 1916 From our Correspondent in the Field

This evening the 7th Bedfords are moving from Carnoy and Caftet Wood to more forward positions. As they have been arriving they have been welcomed by German lachrymatory shells(1). No material damage has been done but slight discomfort has been caused.

All day the Germans have been shelling the area which the army is making its current target, just south of the village of Contalmaison. The Commander-in-Chief of the British Expeditionary Force, Sir Douglas Haig, has issued a memorandum stating that all possible advantage must be taken of confusion caused to the enemy and low morale caused by incessant attacks.
