May 1915: The struggle near Ypres must not blind us to the fighting going on in
far-away Turkey,
on the Gallipoli peninsula. Allied troops – British, French, Indian, New Zealand and
Australian landed here on 25th April and have been confined to the
area of their initial landings by stiffening Turkish resistance.
On 6th May attacks were made by our forces along four spurs separated by steep
gullies. The difficulty of the terrain prevented any substantial advance and
another attack was tried yesterday. Some success was achieved by the colonial
troops but an overall, concerted advance proved impossible. Despite this
set-back it is hoped that success eventually may be forthcoming.
