An Abortive Attack at Ypres

Monday 19th October 1914: the adjutant of the 2nd Bedfords tells us that their division, the 7th, was ordered to attack the village of Menin. This was made by 22nd Brigade but they took so many casualties that they were forced to withdraw. The Bedfords, fortunately, took no part in this action and will retire back to Geluveld this evening.

The countryside in this part of the World is, on the whole, flat. There are a series of very low ridges, up to thirty or forty feet above the plain almost like a succession of waves on the sea. Geluveld is on the top of one of these waves.
