October 1914: the adjutant of the 2nd Bedfords
tells us that their division, the 7th, was ordered to attack the village of Menin . This was made by 22nd Brigade but
they took so many casualties that they were forced to withdraw. The Bedfords , fortunately,
took no part in this action and will retire back to Geluveld this evening.
The
countryside in this part of the World is, on the whole, flat. There are a
series of very low ridges, up to thirty or forty feet above the plain almost
like a succession of waves on the sea. Geluveld is on the top of one of these
waves.
