162nd Brigade on its Way to Egypt



Tuesday 14th December 1915: the second half of 162nd Infantry Brigade, including the 1st/5th is now embarking on RMS Alaunia(1) which, it is understood, will sail for Alexandria in Egypt this afternoon. The journey is expected to take around five days.

(1)RMS Alaunia was a Cunard ocean liner, launched in 1913. She would strike a mine on 19th October 1916 off Hastings and eventually sink with the loss of two crew.

Embarkation for Egypt Begins



Monday 13th December 1915: the 1st/5th Battalion adjutant tells us that half 162nd Infantry Brigade has embarked on RMS Alaunia. The remainder will leave tomorrow and are under the temporary command of the Bedfords’ Commanding Officer Lieutenant-Colonel Brighten.
