Monday 4th January 1915: A
signaller in the 1st Bedfords
tells us: “The trenches are terrible – up to one’s neck in mud and water. It’s
terribly hard for the troops, but I can assure you they will stick it well. All
the same they are nearly all done in”.
“It seems impossible for us
to advance on account of the ground. If we gain a few yards we think we have
done marvellously well and you would say so, too, if you could only see it for
yourself. The weather is still bad and all the roads are cut up”.
