Wednesday 20th December 1916: From our Correspondent in the Field
The 1st
Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, we understand, has relieved the 1st
Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment in the support line at Cuinchy, a village on
the banks of the Aire Canal, just south of Givenchy-lès-la-Bassée and east of
Béthune.
A Company is
garrisoning Mountain, Stafford and Cuinchy Keeps, C and D Companies are in a
trench called Harley Street (at the left-hand side of the map above) and B Company in Esperanto Terrace. Much use is
made of tunnels to travel to and from the front line as the ground is extremely
flat. Consequently a detail of 25 men has been detached permanently to help
construct and maintain tunnels.
