Hill 60

Official map showing Hill 60

Sunday 11th April 1915: The adjutant of the 1st Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment tells us that the battalion is once more in the front line, this time facing Hill 60 south-east of Ypres, which is in enemy hands and has been since 11th November last year. The landscape around Ypres is generally fairly flat with a series of generally north-south ridges heading east, a bit like waves in a gentle sea. Hill 60 stands out as being a low mound, in fact a spoil heap, somewhat higher than the land about. It is around 750 feet long and 150 feet high and was made from earth cut to make the nearby Ypres-Comines Canal. From the top the enemy gets an unimpeded view towards Ypres and Zillebeke and thus of our defences. At some point it is expected that we will make an attack to retake this hill.
