Thursday 24th June 1915: A bad accident happened to No. 2
Section of 2nd/1st Field Company, East Anglian Royal Engineers yesterday, an
officer and five men being injured. It seems that Second Lieutenant Wilson was
about to throw a hand grenade when it burst in his hand, blowing it off three
inches above the wrist. Lance Corporal Riddy received very grave injuries to
the head and Lance Corporal Wilson and Sapper Robinson were seriously injured
and other had slight wounds. Motor ambulances were immediately telephoned for
from London and Saint Albans and the injured officer and men were conveyed to
Saint Albans Hospital where Corporal Riddy succumbed to his injuries.
