Day One Hundred and Thirty One on the Somme

1st Bedfords near Festubert

Wednesday 8th November 1916 From our Correspondent in the Field

In recent reports I have had occasion to comment on the waterlogged battlefield here on the Somme, treacherous with cloying mud and trenches on occasion thigh-high in water. It seems the same conditions are trying the patience of the 1st Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, well north of here near Festubert. In a conversation this morning the adjutant told me that they, too, have had rain every day. Communication and cover trenches have became flooded and much work has been required by the Divisional Pioneer Battalion – 1st/6th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, to compete with the water.
