Christmas Bombardment

Sunday 24th December 1916: From our Correspondent in the Field

The adjutant of the 1st Battalion tells us that they have just moved into the front line at Cuinchy and so they are in the same area as 8th Battalion. They are defending an area known as The Brickstacks.

The adjutant told me by telephone this evening: “The trenches near firing line are in an awful state, Edgeware Road, in particular, being almost impassible. The line consists of a number of saps, mostly approached by tunnels. There is a line of craters, for the most part impassible between our line and the Germans with advanced sap-heads only about 20 to 30 yards from the Germans. The routine will by for the supporting company and headquarters to carry stores and rations and hot food to companies in the line”.

Apparently a Christmas bombardment lasting three days commenced when the relief was completed today. This will ensure a happy Christmas for all concerned.
