Zillebeke Lake
Sunday 8th July 1917
7th Battalion,
Bedfordshire Regiment have indeed, as rumour had it, ended up at Ypres. Today
they have been burying telephone cables south of Zillebeke Lake, east of the
city. They have endured considerable shelling whilst at their task but have
suffered no casualties.
8th Battalion
are in the trenches at Hulluch again, on the old Loos battlefield. Though
often dubbed a “quiet sector” because there has been no major fighting for
nearly two years in reality it is anything but. Here the front lines are so
close that there is always some form of petty spite going on between the rival
armies.
