Sunday 8th August: 6th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, which has been in Flanders for just over a week has joined the 2nd Army near Ypres. Today it had the honour of being inspected by the army commander Lieutenant-General Sir Herbert Plumer(1)

(1) Plumer looked the epitome of the bumbling World War General. In fact he had a sharp and shrewd grasp of modern warfare and a concern for the safety of his men which combined to make him one of the best commanders of a conflict essentially devoid of large-scale tactical flair and strategic brilliance.
