German flamethrowers
Friday 17th March 1916: the adjutant of the 6th Battalion
tells us that yesterday the battalion attended a demonstration of a German
flamethrower. This monstrous weapon unleashes a jet of fire in the same way a
hose discharges water. This barbaric thing was first adopted by the Germans as
long ago as 1911 and was first used by them in war against the French at Verdun
in February last year. Readers may remember their infamous use against our men
at Hooge near Ypres on 30th July last year. It is to be hoped that the
demonstration discovered weak points which can be targeted by efficient
snipers.
