Tuesday 9th May 1916: Mr and Mrs John Law of the Cuckoo
Inn, Ashwell have just received a cheque for £5 but they value much more than
the money an accompanying letter explaining why the unusual gift was made. This
letter, signed by the adjutant of the 1st Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment,
states that the cheque was awarded to Private Law by Major-General Curteis for
gallant conduct in the field. This is not the first honour conferred upon
Private Law, he being already the proud possessor of the Russian Order of Saint
George, presented to him by the Tsar(1). Private Law has seen considerable
fighting during the war and has been once wounded.
