Day Ninety Seven on the Somme

Thursday 5th October 1916 From our Correspondent in the Field

47th (2nd London) Division this evening has managed to push its front line forward beyond a ruined mill north-west of Eaucourt-l’Abbaye. Meanwhile the floundering attacks through a glutinous sea of mud at the Schwaben Redoubt go on as 8th Battalion, Norfolk Regiment, from 53rd Brigade made an attack which came to naught.

From far away Egypt comes a wire that the 1st/5th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, part of 54th (East Anglian) Division is guarding prisoners. They are at El Shatt Camp and have guard over some two hundred Turks.
