Wednesday 5th January 1916: The adjutant of the 7th Battalion,
in the front line near Fricourt on the Somme, tells us that a patrol was sent
out last night to investigate a German sap and a specimen of their barbed wire
was brought in as it is always useful to know if the enemy have developed any
better strength or design of wire so that it can be copied or countered.
Yesterday afternoon the enemy fired several whizz-bangs and rifle grenades. The Battalion replied with ten rifle grenades and twelve trench mortar bombs on a spot
where wood was seen to fly into the air. All enemy activity the ceased.
